A group of us went out to West Melton and enjoyed the evening with several large telescopes, including a 12″ and a 16″ telescope. The views were quite stunning. We got to see saturn with its rings, the tarantula nebula, and the trapezium cluster.

If the time was right and if the time was right we could have seen that uranus has rings too (a bad astronomy joke there),

There’s also a good app called Sky Safari, that has a red-light mode so that you can use it without destroying your night-vision all that much too.

Pre-quake views

Today I heard about an interesting Android app called CityViewAR, that uses your phones video camera and overlays what Christchurch buildings were like before the quake.
