I have a difficult time trying to find good recent tv crime dramas, and enjoy tragic comedy in The Heat with Sandra and Melissa.

Top TV crime dramas

Now that Breaking Bad has come to an end, it’s time to look for other entertainment to keep us happily entertained. James Bano though has created a very nice Breaking Bad full title sequence a a eulogy to the series.

In the meantime, we’re enjoying the Cracker tv series from 20 years ago, and things like the last season of The Sopranos. More recent tv series such as The Blacklist has promise, but is distracting with it’s close ties to SIlence of the Lambs and other famous scenes. I doubt that we’re going to find anything as good as Breaking Bad or Deadwood for a long time to come though.

The Heat

The Heat (2013) is a buddy-cop movie about FBI agent Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) and foul-mouthed Boston cop Mullins (Melissa McCarthy).

It’s hard not to compare this with other effective buddy cop movies such as Lethal Weapon or Beverly Hills Cop, but The Heat really does a great job at introducing Ashburn and Mullins to us right from the beginning, Ashburn is straightlaced and uptight, and manages to annoy everyone around her with her strict procedural manner,  and when she vies for a promotion she needs to demonstrate that she can work well with others so is sent to Boston to work a drug cartel case. Mullins is a local Boston cop who’s big loud and effective, and loves chasing down bad guys books be damned.

When these two meet, sparks fly and the comedy just takes off from there. Neither can bear to give an inch, so for example there’s a special moment when they enter a suspects building, , attempting to block the other as they each need to be first in through the door. Little moments like that help to build up the tragic tapestry of their psychology make-up, resulting in an even more enjoyable outcome when they find a common enemy and work together in their own special ways towards a beneficial outcome.
